Building coils and wicking

Building coils and wicking

How do you create your own coils? And why would you do it? We explain the principles to you.

To get started with building coils yourself, a special type of atomizer is required, these are known as RBA's (ReBuildable Atomizers) and consist of the following types:

RDA = Rebuildable Dripper Atomizer

With this type the coil and wick are close to the mouthpiece and the liquid is dripped directly onto the coil and wick. This means that with this type there is no extra reservoir for the liquid and will have to be dripped regularly.

RTA = Rebuildable Tank Atomizer

With an RTA, the coil with wick is just like with an ordinary e-cigarette, at the bottom of the tank in a casing inside the liquid reservoir and can therefore simply be filled.

Genesis style RBA

Finally, with the Genesis- style RBA, the coil is again at the top of the tank with the wick vertically downwards into the liquid reservoir, this means it has a liquid reservoir again and can therefore simply be filled again.

Finally

You will need a pre-made coil or filament to make the coil yourself (Kanthal is most commonly used for this) and a wick to go through the coil and soak up the liquid to be able to evaporate (there are a lot of options for this but usually a form of cotton is used). There are also some practical tools available for cutting the filament, the cotton or the wick, and for winding the correct thickness of coil.

The number of wraps and the thickness of the wire you use ultimately determines the resistance (Ω) of the coil. A useful tool to calculate this see for example: Steam Engine Coil Tool
