What do e-liquids consist of?

What do e-liquids consist of?

An e-liquid is the product that you consume in your e-cigarette. What is in it and what do these ingredients mean? Read more about it here.

E-liquids usually contain 4 basic ingredients, Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin and a flavour. In most cases there is also a small amount of water in the e-liquid to make it a little thinner. Finally, as a last ingredient there can also be nicotine in the e-liquid. Nicotine is a matter of personal preference and therefore optional.

Propylene glycol (PG)

PG is already being used for a long time in various products such as COPD inhalers for asthma patients, but also in everyday items such as soft drinks, soap/shampoo, toothpaste and ice cream. Out of the 2 basic ingredients, PG is most used in e-liquids, this is due to the fact that PG has a somewhat thinner viscousity and is therefore easier to use with almost any coil. PG gives a somewhat sharper vapour relative to VG (throat-hit) but is more neutral in taste (less sweet).

Vegetable glycerin (VG)

VG is also used in some inhalers for COPD or asthma and can also be found in wine and in low amounts in our blood.

VG has a somewhat thicker substance than PG, which means that an e-liquid with a high VG content cannot be used with every coil.

VG gives thicker/denser vapour than PG and is less sharp on the throat but has a slightly sweeter taste.

You will find both PG and VG in almost every e-liquid. At J WELL the usual ratios are 70%PG/30%VG, 50%PG/50%VG and 30%PG/70% VG. Other brands sometimes also sell up to 100% VG.
